We’ve seen a hundred plus of these recent-model Whirlpool Refrigerators either over-cool and freeze food in the refrigerator cabinet, or stop cooling altogether. What are the symptoms, and how can you fix this? I tear apart two Whirlpool refrigerators to get to the matter at least somewhat and discuss what may be going on to cause the issues.

Models that suffer these situations tend to be Whirlpool WRT31, WRT51, WRT53, and MRT1188 refrigerators with various additional numbers. Generally, the units will have ”Athena” or ”Hercules” control boards in them.
